Critical Endeavour is an educational and workshop programme for emerging dance and performance journalists that took place for the first time during ImPulsTanz 2008 in Vienna. It is part of the new European initiative Jardin d’Europe that was developed by its 10 network partners.
Critical Endeavour’s aim is to enhance public discourse on dance and to promote exchange about best practices, ethics, and responsibilities in criticism within the respective countries and contexts. It offers a broad range of expert input, professional experience, debate and exchange with artists, peers, and various actors in the field to the young journalists.
Critical Endeavour 2009 will be held within the frames of the Working Title Festival in Brussels from November 30 - December 13 in cooperation with the Vlaams Theater Instituut.

Mission Statement by PieterT´Jonck and Anna Tilroe
In this workshop we want to ascertain what the right attitude might be for a critic to take towards young and perhaps immature work. We encourage an attitude whose first step is a meticulous examination. What exactly is happening here? What means are being used? Have we ever seen anything comparable elsewhere – possibly in another discipline – and what makes this work different?
On the basis of this careful analysis we try to determine whether the work of art finds an answer to its own issues and questions or actually avoids them. Lastly, we may also wonder what relevance this may have.
One of the main points is putting accurately into words what we see and think when watching a performance. We test out a variety of ways of talking about artistic work. In addition to the review, these include the interview and the introductory article.
